श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच
गङ्गा तु सरितां श्रेष्ठा तथा चैव सरस्वती ।
कावेरी देविका चैव सिन्धुः सालकुटी तथा ॥५॥
Shrii-Maarkannddeya Uvaaca
Ganggaa Tu Saritaam Shresstthaa Tathaa Caiva Sarasvatii |
Kaaverii Devikaa Caiva Sindhuh Saalakuttii Tathaa ||5||

सरयूः शतरुद्रा च मही चर्मिलया सह ।
गोदावरी तथा पुण्या तथैव यमुना नदी
पयोष्णीच शतद्रुश्च तथाधर्मनदीशुभा ।
Sarayuuh Shatarudraa Ca Mahii Carmilayaa Saha |
Godaavarii Tathaa Punnyaa Tathai[aa-E]va Yamunaa Nadii
Payossnnii-Ca Shatadrush-Ca Tathaa-Dharma-Nadii-Shubhaa |

Meaning:
1: (And also) Rivers Sarayu and Shatarudra, along with Mahi and Carmila, ...
2: ... Godavari in like manner is holy and indeed river Yamuna ...
3: ... and Payoshni and Shatadru and similarly the splendid Dharmanadi,






एताश्चान्याश्चसरितःसर्वपापहराःस्मृताः
किं_तु ते कारणं तात! वक्ष्यामि नृपसत्तम! ।
समुद्राः सरितः सर्वाः कल्पे कल्पे क्षयं गताः ॥५४॥
Etaash-Ca-Anyaash-Ca-Saritah-Sarva-Paapa-Haraah-Smrtaah
Kim_tu Te Kaarannam Taata! Vakssyaami Nrpasattama! |
Samudraah Saritah Sarvaah Kalpe Kalpe Kssayam Gataah ||54||

Meaning:
1: These and other Rivers are remembered as destroyer of all Sins,
2: But, that reason, my son, I will tell you; you who are the most virtuous king (referring to Yudhisthira),
3: All Seas and Rivers get destroyed at the end of each Kalpa (Time period after which the world gets destroyed),






सप्तकल्पक्षये क्षीणे न मृता तेन नर्मदा ।
नर्मदैकैव राजेन्द्र ! परंतिष्ठेत्सरिद्वरा ॥५५॥
Sapta-Kalpa-Kssaye Kssiinne Na Mrtaa Tena Narmadaa |
Narmadai[a-E]kai[a-E]va Raajendra ! Param-Tisstthet-Sarid-Varaa ||55||

Meaning:
1: Seven Kalpas have passed, but that Narmada has not perished,
2: Narmada is indeed the only one, O best of kings, the excellent river which has stayed beyond (the seven kalpas),






तोयपूर्णा महाभाग! मुनिसङ्घैरभिष्टुता ।
गङ्गाद्या सरितश्चान्याः कल्पे कल्पे क्षयं गताः ॥५६॥
Toya-Puurnnaa Mahaabhaaga! Muni-Sangghair-Abhissttutaa |
Gangga-[A]adyaa Saritash-Ca-Anyaah Kalpe Kalpe Kssayam Gataah ||56||

Meaning:
1: Filled with Water, which is filled with Holiness, this river is praised by groups of Munis (Sages),
2: Ganga and other rivers perish at the end of each Kalpa,






एषा देवी पुरा दृष्टा तेन वक्ष्यामि तेऽनघ ॥५७॥
आश्चर्यभूता राजेन्द्र! त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुता ॥५८॥
Essaa Devii Puraa Drssttaa Tena Vakssyaami Te-[A]nagha ||57||
Aashcaryabhuutaa Raajendra! Trissu Lokessu Vishrutaa ||58||

Meaning:
1: This Devi has been seen before (in earlier Kalpas), I will tell (that story) to you, O sinless one,
2: This river which gives rise to wonder, O best of kings, is well-known in the Three Worlds.
