Origin of Devi Vindhyavasini (as the daughter of Yashoda)

Vindhyachala: Origin of Devi Vindhyavasini (as the daughter of Yashoda):

(Aushanasa Purana - Vindhyachala Mahatmya - 26)

Meditation: I meditate on Devi Vindhyavasini incarnating as the daughter of Yashoda.

Devi Devi Yogamaya and KamsaPrithivi Devi taking refuge of Lord Brahma with great sorrow: During the end of Dwapara Yuga and the start of Kali Yuga, the earth was enveloped by daityas. Prithivi Devi, burdened by the sins of the daityas, took the form of a cow, and came to Lord Brahma, crying pitifully. She said that she was tormented by the unbearable sins of the wicked people.

Lord Brahma meeting Lord Vishnu: Lord Brahma, consoling her, came to kshira sagara accompanied by the devas, to meet Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma eulogized Lord Vishnu with Mahapurusha Sukta. They heard a voice saying: "Do not be afraid. Lord Mahavishnu will incarnate in Yadu Vamsha and slay those demons. They have lost their wisdom, being enveloped by Maya."

About Ugrasena and Kamsa: Ugrasena was a king of Soma Vamsha (Chandra Vamsha) and was ruling over Mathura. He was from the lineage of king Yayati. He begot a son named Kamsa, born from the part of daityas, and became the enemy of the devas. Kamsa imprisoned his own father (Ugrasena) and started ruling from Mathura.

About Vasudeva and Devaki: Kamsa married his sister Devaki to Vasudeva, the son of Surasena.

Kamsa hearing a voice predicting his death: After the marriage of Devaki, when Kamsa was taking his sister to the house of Vasudeva, he heard a voice saying that: "Whom you are taking with you, the eight one born from her womb will kill you". Hearing this prophecy, Kamsa put Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison.

Kamsa killing the first six sons of Devaki: Kamsa killed the first six sons of Devaki (as soon as they were born).

Lord Ananta incarnating as the seventh son of Devaki: Then, Lord Ananta incarnated (as the seventh son of Devaki).

Vasudeva sending Rohini to Nandagopa: Vasudeva, out of the fear of Kamsa, sent his second wife Rohini to the house of Nandagopa at Vraja.

Bhagavan requesting Devi Yogamaya to incarnate: Bhagavan requested Devi Yogamaya to enter the womb of Devaki and transfer Sesha to the womb of Rohini. Bhagavan said that He will incarnate as the son of Devaki. Since nothing can be accomplished without her assistance, may Ambika incarnate as the daughter of Yashoda. Thereafter, She will be worshipped on the earth under various names like Bhadrakali, Durga, Vaishnavi, Vijaya, Kumuda, Chandika, Krishnaveti, Madhavi, Sharada, Ambika, Maya, Shakti, Narayani etc. Many demons like Shumbha and Nishumbha will be born, whom She will slay as Vindhyachala Nivasini.

Leelas of Mahamaya and abiding in Vindhyachala: Then, Devi Yogamaya transferred Sesha from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini. She, Herself incarnated as the daughter of Yashoda. Thereafter, Lord Vishnu incarnated as the (eighth) son of Devaki. Vasudeva, under the spell of Maya, exchanged the son of Devaki with the daughter of Rohini. Kamsa, hearing about the birth (of the eight womb), came there and with pride, tried to kill the daughter by thrashing her against a stone. Devi Mahamaya slipped from the hands of Kamsa and said with anger: "O wicked one, what is the use of killing me? The one who will kill you has already taken birth." Thereafter, Devi Mahamaya adorned with bow, trident, sword and shield, and conch and discus, and eulogized by Siddhas, Charanas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, Kinnaras, Devas and Sages, went to Vindhyachala and abided there. Abiding there, She was worshipped by the Devas and came to be known as Vindhyavasini. The Devas served Her by their parts. Celestials and Sages came to that Kshetra knowing it to a kshetra of great auspiciousness.

Devi Ashtabhuja Temple, Mirzapur district, Uttar PradeshVindhyachal - Ashtabhuja Temple
(Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh)

Devi Ashtabhuja Temple of Vindhyachal is identified with the western kona of the Maha-Trikona Yantra mentioned in the Vindhyachala Mahatmya of Aushanasa Purana. Devi Saraswati resides in this kona.

Devi Ashtabhuja is identified with Devi Vindhyavasini as Yogamaya, the daughter of Yashoda. When Kamsa tried to kill Her, She slipped from his hands and manifested as Devi Durga with eight arms. Thereafter, eulogized by the devas, She went to Vindhyachala and resided there.
