Saptarshi Kunda

Vindhyachala: Saptarshi Kunda:

(Aushanasa Purana - Vindhyachala Mahatmya - 16)

Meditation: I meditate on Lord Vishnu giving darshan to Saptarshis after their penance.

Lord VishnuSaptarshis contemplating on way to obtain spiritual knowledge: One day the Saptarshis, after taking bath in the Tapti river, sat on the river bank and started contemplating. They thought: What is the supreme spiritual knowledge? What is its form, and what are its symptoms? How to obtain that knowledge of Brahman? Which place should we go where there is uninterrupted peace?

Saptarshis taking refuge of Lord Brahma: Then sage Atri suggested that let them go to Lord Brahma, who is the grandfather of all. The Saptarshis went to Lord Brahma to find a way. Lord Brahma said that adhyatma (spirituality) is a very deep subject and only yogis can know that. One can attain Moksha only when (spiritual) knowledge dawns. When the impurities of desires get destroyed from chitta, then that knowledge dawns which leads to Moksha. Then Lord Brahma suggested them to go to Vindhyachala and perform penance whereby they will obtain that knowledge. Lord Brahma told them about his penance there by which he obtained the power of creation.

Saptarshis performing penance at Vindhyachala: The Saptarshis went to Vindhyachala and after creating a kunda, started performing a severe auspicious penance.

Lord Vishnu giving darshan to Saptarshis: Lord Vishnu became pleased by their penance and appeared there. He told the Saptarshis to ask for a boon. The Saptarshis eulogized Lord Vishnu with various stotras. Then they asked for the boon of spiritual knowledge and that their kunda become famous and become bestower of knowledge. Lord Vishnu bestowed spiritual knowledge on them and said that the kunda will become famous in the world.
