Narayana Kunda and Linga
Vindhyachala: Narayana Kunda and Linga:

Lord Shiva giving darshan to Lord Vishnu after his long penance.

Lord Vishnu deciding to perform penance for the cause of the devas: Once the devas were overpowered by the demons. They invoked Lord Vishnu for refuge. Listening to their condition, Lord Vishnu said that he will help them after worshipping Lord Shiva. Through his meditative vision, Lord Vishnu decided that Vindhyachala is the best place to perform penance.

Lord Vishnu performing penance in Vindhyachala: After going to Vindhyachala, Lord Vishnu eulogized Jagadamba in various ways before performing penance. He went forward and saw the Taraka Kunda and Linga. He decided to perform penance in that region. On the western side of Tarakeshwara Linga, he created a kunda and established Lord Shiva. Then Lord Vishnu started performing a severe penance and worhipped Lord Shiva in various ways. Every day, Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva with one thousand Lotus flowers. He also worshipped Lord Shiva with various other flowers like Champaka, Malati, Patala, Punnaga, Keshara as well as Bilva leaves. In this way, three thousand years elapsed. One day, by the will of God, out of the thousand Lotus flowers used for worship, there was a deficiency of one flower. Then Lord Vishnu offered one of his eyes to Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva giving darshan to Lord Vishnu: Lord Shiva became pleased and appeared there with Devi Parvati. Lord Shiva told him to ask for a boon. Lord Vishnu first eulogized Lord Shiva. Then he eulogized Devi. Lord Shiva said that the penance perfomed by Lord Vishnu was highly auspicious. Lord Shiva gave the Sudarshan Chakra to Lord Vishnu for slaying the demons. Lord Vishnu asked the boon that the kunda become famous in the world by his name and grant salvation to those bathing there. Lord Shiva granted those boons and glorified the Kunda and the Stotras of Shiva-Parvati chanted by Lord Vishnu. Lord Shiva also granted the boon that Lord Vishnu will possess enchanting beauty and his eyes will be like Lotus. Hence he will be famous in the world as Pundarikaksha. He was also remain as Antaryami and control the world.
