Vindhyachala: Greatness of Karnavati Sangam:

• Story of a brahmana and a cow: There was a brahman in the dynasty of sage Pulastya, who resided in the Karnaki city towards the south. He had wife with two sons. Once he left for Kashi and by the turn of fate, died in Kashi. His wife performed his shraddha according to scriptural injunctions. Then she married his two sons, distributed all her wealth to them and resided there for sometime. When the brahmani was about to die, his son asked him her final wish. She said that after her death, they should take her ashes to some holy place. After she died the sons performed her sharaddha as per scriptural injunctions. Then the son whose name was Sumeda took her ashes and left the house searching for a holy place (Teertha). During the travel he took shelter in the house of a brahman. There, a wonderful thing happened. The brahman was not there. In the morning, when the brahmani and her son came to milk the cow, the son started beating the calf. The cow did not allow the brahmani to milk her. Then Sumeda heard the cow conversing with the calf at night. The cow said that she is very sad seeing that her son getting beaten by the son of the brahmani. She will kill that son so that the brahmani understands the pain of a son. The calf tried to desist her mother from brahma-hatya by telling about the precepts of karma. The mother cow said that after killing the brahman son, her white colour will turn black due to brahma-hatya. Then she will go to a great Teertha and take bath. The mother cow did as she decided. Next morning, the brahmani again came to milk the cow and the son of the brahmani started beating the calf. The cow killed the son with her horns. The people of the neighbourhood assembled there and released the cow. The skin of the cow turned black and the cow was proceeding towards a Teertha to get absolved of her sins. Sumedha followed the cow. The cow came to Vindhya Kshetra and took bath in the Karnavati Sangam. Her skin turned white. Coming to know about the greatness of the place, Sumedha released the ashes of her mother in that great Teertha. Sumedha saw her mother attaining a divine body and blessing him, proceeded towards heaven.
