Devi slaying demons Shumbha and Nishumbha in Vindhyachala.

Devi slaying demons Shumbha and Nishumbha in the Himalayas: During the 28th Kaliyuga, two demons Shumbha and Nishumbha became powerful and defeated the devas. The devas went to Himalayas and invoked the Devi. The Devi incarnated and abided in the Himalayas. There, She slayed demons Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Devi saying that Shumbha and Nishumbha will be born again: Devi said that when the 28th Kaliyuga will come again, Shumbha and Nishumbha will be born again. During that time, She will take birth in the house of Nanda Gopa and abide in the Vindhyachala. If calamity befalls them, the devas should come to Vindhyachala. She Devi will perform their work.

Devas invoking Devi in the Vindhyachala: The devas were again defeated by Shumbha and Nishumbha, and remembering the words of Devi, went to Vindhyachala. There they eulogized Devi and propitiated Her with the attitude of surrender.

Devi giving darshan to the devas in the Vindhyachala: Devi became pleased and appeared before the devas. She told them to ask for a boon. The devas requested her to destroy Shumbha and Nishumbha. Devi assured them that She will destroy the demons.

Devi sending a messenger to Shumbha: Devi then created a messenger and sent him to Shumbha with the message that: "O wicked one, if you want to save your life, then go to Patala Loka. Else, if you are egoistic, go to Vindhyachala and fight with Devi". Shumbha became angry.

Shumbha sending demons to capture Devi: Shumbha sent some demons to capture Devi. When they tried to capture Her, She cut them to pieces with Her weapons.

Shumbha sending Dhumralochana and Chanda-Munda: Shumbha then sent demons Dhumralochana and Chanda-Munda with a bigger army. They were also slayed by Devi.

Shumbha and Nishumbha fighting with Devi: Then Shumbha and Nishumbha came to Vindhyachala and fought a wondrous battle with Devi. A fierce battle ensued between Devi and the demons. Finally, Shumbha and Nishumbha were slayed by Devi.

Devi continued to abide in Vindhyachala: When Shumbha and Nishumbha was slayed, the Kinnaras eulogized Devi. Devi continued to abide in Vindhyachala and bestowed bhukti and mukti to the jivas.
