Penance of Gayasura

Gaya: Penance of Gayasura:

(Vayu Purana - 106)

Meditation: I meditate on Lord Adi-Gadadhara abiding in Gaya.

Lord VishnuGayasura performing penance: Gayasura was an aura with great prowess. His height was more than hundred yojanas and his girth was sixty yojanas. He is remembered as a great Vaishnava. He performed a severe penance on the Kolahala mountain. For thousands of years he performed penance becoming still. The devas were agitated by that penance. They went to Brahma Loka and sought protection from Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma and the devas went to Lord Shiva in Kailasha. Lord Shiva, Brahma and the devas went to Lord Vishnu in the Kshira Sagara. The devas eulogized Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared there and asked the reason for their visit. The devas sought protection from demon Gaya. Lord Vishnu told Lord Brahma and the devas to go near Gayasura, and said that he will follow them.

Lord Vishnu giving boon to Gayasura: Lord Vishnu mounted on Garuda and went near Gayasura. He told Gayasura to ask for a boon. Seeing Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara, Gayasura asked the boon that he become the holiest; holier than all gods, brahmanas, sages, yogis, mantras, rites, mountains etc. Lord Vishnu bestowed the boon that he become Pavitra (Sacred).
