Bhrigukaccha: Lord Vamana going to the Ashwamedha Yagna of king Bali:

(Srimad Bhagavatam - Skanda 8 - 18 to 20)

• Meditation: I meditate on the Vamana Avatara of Lord Vishnu.

• Lord Vamana going to the Ashwamedha Yagna of king Bali at Bhrigukaccha: During that time, king Bali was performing an Ashwamedha Yagna at Bhrigukaccha (on the northern bank of river Narmada) under the direction of Bhrigus headed by Shukracharya. As Lord Vamana walked towards the sacrificial site, the earth seemed to have tremors. His radiance was such that before him the entire assembly of the brahmanas performing the sacrifice paled into a shadow. They began to wonder whether he was the Sun-god or the Fire-god. As he entered the sacrificial site, they automatically stood up to receive him.

• Lord Vamana asking for three paces of land from king Bali: King Mahabali got up and received Lord Vamana with due honours. He washed his feet and poured that water on his head. He then told him to ask for the thing for which he had come. Lord Vamana was pleased with the cordial welcome of king Bali and praised his lineage for their generosity and heroism. Then he asked for land which will be measured by Him with three paces. King Mahabali told him to ask for greater things but Lord Vamana said that those whose senses are not under his control will not be satisfied with all the pleasant objects of the world. He will be satisifed with just three paces of land.

• King Mahabali deciding to give the land to Lord Vamana inspite of objection of Shukracharya: King Mahabali then decided to give three paces of land to Lord Vamana. Meanwhile guru Shukracharya came to know that Lord Vamana was indeed Lord Vishnu in disguise. He warned king Bali that He is Lord Vishnu and will measure the world and heaven with just two paces. Therefore the king should not grant him any land. King Mahabali said that he will not retract from his words and send away the Brahmacharin. On the other hand, if he is really Lord Vishnu, it is his great fortune to serve Him. Guru Shukracharya became angry and cursed king Bali that soon he will lose all his fortune and glory.
