Lord Varaha telling about Venkatachala

(Skanda Purana - Venkatachala Mahatmya - 1)

• Bhudevi arriving there: After sometime Bhudevi arrived there accompanied by her companions Ila and Pingala. Her colour was like fresh durva leaves and she was adorned with various ornaments. She placed flowers at the feet of Lord Varaha and prostated before Him. The Lord embraced her and made her sit on His lap. Bhudevi then had a conversation with Lord Varaha. She asked about the important mountains which support her. Lord Varaha told about Sumeru, Himavan, Vindhya, Mandara, Gandhamadana, Salagrama, Chitrakuta, Malyavan, Pariyatraka, Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Simhadri, Raivata and Anjana.

• Lord Varaha telling about Venkatachala: In course of the conversation about the mountains, Lord Varaha telling about Venkatachala. Among the mountains in the south is Hastisaila. On the north of Hastisaila is river Suvarnamukhari. Towards the north of that river is the Kamala lake. On the bank of Kamala lake Lord Hari abides with Balabhadra. On the north of that lake is a divine forest with Harichandana trees. In that forest stands Venkatachala mountain several yojanas long and high. Devas, Munis, Danavas, Apsaras, Nagas etc. frequent there and perform penance.

• Lord Varaha telling about the important Teerthas at Venkatachala: Lord Varaha then told about the important Teerthas of Venkatachala and their greatness. He mentioned about Chakra Teertham, Daiva Teertham, Akasaganga, Kumaradhara, Papanasam, Pandavan and Swami Pushkarini. Among them Swami Pushkarini is the most important. Lord Varaha abides on the western bank of Swami Pushkarini with Bhudevi, and Lord Srinivasa on the southern bank.
