Indradyumna reaching the shrine of Sri Kapotesha

(Skanda Purana - Purushottama Kshetra Mahatmya - 12 to 13)

• Indradyumna reaching the shrine of Sri Kapotesha and Sri Bilvesha: On the second day the king reached Kapotesha and Bilvesha. Kapotesha was full of ponds and trees. Bilvesha was on the eastern side on the sea shore.

• Indradyumna hearing about Sri Kapotesha from sage Narada: Sage Narada told the legend of Sri Kapotesha to Indradyumna. Formerly the place was known as Kusasthali which was only filled with Kusha grass and was devoid of trees. Lord Shiva performed penance over there on Lord Vishnu. During the course of the severe penance the Lord was reduced to the size of a kapota (dove). Hence the name Kapotesha. Lord Vishnu was pleased with the penance and the place was made beautiful with ponds and lakes like Vrindavan.
