• Meditation: I meditate on Devi slaying demon Mahishasura along with his armies.

Devi

• Story of Mahishasura: When Indra was the Lord of devas in heaven and Mahishasura was the Lord of asuras, there was a battle between the devas and the asuras. In that battle Mahishasura defeated the devas and conquered the heaven. He threw the devas out of the heaven and assumed the jurisdiction of Chandra, Surya, Indra etc. The devas roamed in the earth like ordinary mortals.

• Devas seeking help from Trinity: When the devas were ousted from heaven by Mahishasura, they roamed in the earth like ordinary mortals. Finally they approached the Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva for protection. Lead by Brahma the devas went to Vishnu and Shiva.

• Manifestation of Devi Durga: The devas approached the trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva for protection. Lead by Brahma the devas went to Vishnu and Shiva. Hearing about the pitiable condition of the devas their faces were filled with angry frowns. From their angry faces issued Mahat-Tejas (Light of great power) which united together (to form a great mass of Light). From the bodies of the devas also issued Light of power which all combined together to form a great Light which blazed like mountain. From that great Light of power manifested the Devi whose lustre pervaded the three worlds. The devas were filled with joy to see Her and adorned her with various weapons. • Devi entering the battlefield and challenging Mahishasura: Then the Devi entered the battlefield and challenged Mahishasura with a loud roar and deafening laughter. It reverberated all around. It shook the worlds, trembled the seas and rocked the mountains. Her footsteps bent the earth, Her diadem scraped the sky and the twang of Her bow-string shook the nether-worlds. The sages bowed down and extolled Her. Mahishasura saw the Devi pervading the three quarters with Her lustre, spreading Her thousand arms holding weapons which illumined the sky.

• Armies of Mahishasura surrounding Devi: Then the armies of Mahishasura consisting of millions of chariots, elephants, horses and foot-soldiers surrounded the Devi in the battlefield. Generals of Mahishasura like Cikshura, Camara, Udagra, Asiloman, Bashkala etc. lead those armies ready to fight with the Devi with their various weapons.

• Devi Chandika destroying the armies of Mahishasura: A fierce battle ensued between Devi Chandika and the armies of Mahishasura. The asuras showered their weapons on Her. Devi Chandika with Her own weapons easily cut those to pieces. Her lion fell upon the enemies like a forest fire and started destroying them. The Devi heaved sighs which created thousands of Her own soldiers who started fighting against the enemies. Then the Devi with Her own weapons started vanquishing the enemies swiftly, rendering some one-armed, some one-eyed and some headless. The lion of the Devi accompanied Her in extinguishing the vital breaths of the enemies with thundering roars. In no time the armies of Mahishasura was destroyed.

• Devas eulogizing Devi Chandika: Seeing Devi Chandika destroy the armies of Mahishasura, the devas eulogized Her from heaven and showered flowers on Her.

• Devi slaying demons Cikshura and Camara: Devi Chandika slayed demon Cikshura with Her pike and Her lion slayed demon Camara with a blow of its paw.

• Devi slaying demons Udagra and Karala: Devi Chandika slayed demon Udagra with stones and demon Karala with fist.

• Devi slaying demons Bidala, Durdhara and Durmukha: Devi Chandika slayed demon Bidala with Her sword and demons Durdhara and Durmukha with Her arrows.

• Devi binding the buffalo form of Mahishasura: When Mahishasura initially took the buffalo form, Devi Chandika bound that buffalo form of Mahishasura with Her noose. Bound by Her noose, Mahishasura quitted that buffalo form.

• Devi slaying the lion form of Mahishasura: Thereafter Mahishasura took the lion form. Devi Chandika beheaded the lion form. Mahishasura quitted that lion form.

• Devi slaying the man form of Mahishasura: Thereafter Mahishasura assumed the form of a man with a sword in hand. Devi Chandika cut to pieces that man form. Mahishasura quitted that man form.

• Devi cutting the trunk of the elephant form of Mahishasura: Thereafter Mahishasura assumed the form of an elephant and attacked the lion of Devi. Devi Chandika cut of the trunk of the elephant with Her sword. Mahishasura quitted that elephant form.

• Devi finally slaying the buffalo form of Mahishasura: Finally Mahishasura assumed a buffalo form again and shook the three worlds. Devi Chandika drank a divine drink and jumping over the buffalo, pressed it down with Her feet and pierced it with Her trident. Mahishasura half-issued from its buffalo form. Finally the Devi severed its head with Her sword.

• Devas and sages eulogizing the Devi: Seeing the powerful asura slain by Devi, the devas and sages of heaven, and the gandharvas and apsaras eulogized Her from heaven. There was great exultation all around. (Shakradi Stutih)
