Devi: Devi slaying demons Madhu-Kaitabha:

(Devi Mahatmyam - 1)

• Meditation: I meditate on Devi slaying demons Madhu-Kaitabha through Lord Vishnu.

Devi

• Birth of Madhu and Kaitabha: During the end of a kalpa when the universe was one with the ocean (and creation had not started), the Devi abided as the Yoganidra of Vishnu. During that time two terrible demons Madhu and Kaitabha emerged from the dirt of the ear of Vishnu. Immediately after appearing, the demons tried to slay Brahma.

• Lord Brahma invoking the Devi: Lord Brahma in order to awaken Lord Vishnu invoked the Devi glorifying Her and praying to Her to leave Hari so that he can fight with the demons (Tantrokta Ratri Suktam).

• Devi withdrawing Her power of Yoganidra and appearing before Brahma: The Devi withdrew Her power of Yoganidra from the eyes, mouth and other parts of Hari and appeared before Brahma (in Her divine form).

• Lord Vishnu fighting with the demons for five thousand years: When the power of Yoganidra was withdrawn, Lord Vishnu rose up and fought with the demons. The fight continued for five thousand years.

• Devi deluding Madhu and Kaitabha with Her power: The Devi then deluded Madhu and Kaitabha with Her power. Being deluded they told Vishnu to ask for a boon. Lord Vishnu asked the boon that they be slayed by him. Seeing water all around (and thinking that there can be no place without water), the demons said that they may be slayed only in a place where there is no water. Lord Vishnu took them on his loins (where there was no water) and beheaded them with his discus.
