Shurparaka: Parashurama reclaiming land from the Sea:

(Brahmanda Purana - 57 to 58)

Lord Parashurama

• Meditation: I meditate on the Parashurama Avatara of Lord Vishnu.

• Parashurama reclaiming land from the Sea: The holy place Gokarna fell inside the sea when the sons of Sagara were digging the earth. The sages living there approached Parashurama to reclaim the land. Parashurama approached the sea and asked the ocean god to appear before him. But the ocean god disregarded him. Then Parashurama in anger took up his bow and fitting an Agni missile to it, stretched the bow string up to his ears. Fiery smoke emanated from the arrow and agitated the ocean. The ocean god in fear appeared before Parashurama and surrendered to him. When Parashurama asked for the lost land, the ocean god said that it cannot be recovered, but he will hold back as much ground as mentally intended by Parashurama. Then Parashurama took up the sruva (sacrificial ladle), mentally demarcated a boundary, and hurled it into the ocean. It went two hundred yojanas towards north-west and fell down. The place reclaimed from the ocean came to be known as Shurparaka.
