Mahishmati: Parashurama going to Mahishmati and slaying Kartavirya Arjuna in a battle:

(Brahmanda Purana - 38 to 41)

Lord Parashurama

• Meditation: I meditate on the Parashurama Avatara of Lord Vishnu.

• Parashurama slaying Kartavirya Arjuna in a battle at Mahishmati: Thereafter Parashurama came to Mahishmati where river Narmada flowed. Parashurama offered obeisance to river Narmada. Then he sent a messenger to Kartavirya Arjuna challenging him for a fight.

Kartavirya Arjuna came with a huge army accompanied by many kings. During a fight which lasted several days, Parashurama killed many kings. The prominent ones who were skilled in weapons and offered stiff resistence to Parashurama were:
- Mangala, the king of Matsya
- Sucandra, born in Solar race
- Pushkaraksha, the son of Sucandra

Finally, Parashurama fought with Kartavirya Arjuna. After a prolonged battle, Parashurama cut off the ears of Kartavirya Arjuna. Kartavirya Arjuna was humiliated and his splendour was reduced. He invoked Lord Dattatreya in his mind, but the Lord did not appear due to his evil actions. Finally Kartavirya Arjuna hit Parashurama with the unfailing trident of Lord Dattatreya. Parashurama fell down unconscious. He was resuscitated by Lord Shankara with Sanjeevani Vidya. Then Parashurama took up the Pashupata missile of Lord Shiva and slayed Kartavirya Arjuna.

Kartavirya Arjuna, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, entered the discus of Lord Vishnu. After Kartavirya Arjuna was slayed, his hundred sons encircled Parashurama with their armies. Rama slayed most of them and the rest fled from the battlefield.

After the battle was over, Parashurama came to river Narmada, bathed there and worshipped Lord Shiva.
