Kailasha: Parashurama going to Kailasha and encountering Ganesha:

(Brahmanda Purana - 41 to 43)

Lord Parashurama

• Meditation: I meditate on the Parashurama Avatara of Lord Vishnu.

• Parashurama going to Kailasha and encountering Ganesha: Parashurama then set off to Kailasha to visit Lord Shiva and Devi Uma. At Kailasha he first saw the city of Alaka (of Kubera). Then he visited the abode of Lord Shiva. There was a great Banyan Tree with cool shade. There were Shiva ganas stationed at various places. Sri Ganesha and Kartikeya were there near the entrance of the palace of Lord Shiva.

When Parashurama was about to enter the palace, Ganesha told him to wait since Lord Shiva was sleeping in the company of Uma. Let him first go inside and get the permission of the Lord. Parashurama replied that he will go inside, bow down to Shiva and Parvati and return immediately. Kartavirya Arjuna and many other kings have been slain due to the grace of Lord Shiva, therefore he wants to bow down to Lord Shiva. Ganesha however told him to wait since Shiva and Parvati are together and their privacy should not be disturbed. Parashurama did not like the advice of Ganesha and tried to go inside. Ganesha restrained him. There was a war of words and then a hand fight. Skanda intervened and separated them. Parashurama became angry and took up his axe to hurl it on Ganesha. Ganesha lifted Parashurama and took him through various worlds (Bhur Loka, Bhuvar Loka etc,. then Vaikuntha, then Patala Loka). Then Ganesha hurled him in water. Parashurama became frightened. Ganesha brought him to the same place. Parashurama was both filled with joy (on seeing the different worlds) and grief (due to his defeat). Seeing Ganesha, he became angry and hurled his axe. Since the axe was given by Lord Shiva, Ganesha received it with his left tusk. The axe chopped off the tusk of Ganesha which fell down and was covered with blood. The fall of the tusk made a terrible sound and agitated the worlds.

Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati came out hearing that sound. Seeing the condition of Ganesha and hearing everything from Skanda, Devi Parvati became angry. She told Lord Shiva that Parashurama whom he considered as his son has given his fees today by chopping of the teeth of Ganesha. She has been dishonoured by this and will leave Kailasha. Lord Shiva did not say anything but mentally remembered Lord Krishna to resolve the matter.

Lord Krishna came there with Devi Radha. Lord Krishna mentioned various names of Ganesha and said that today Ganesha will be known as Ekadanta to his devotees due to this incident. Devi Radha took Ganesha on her lap and immediately the wound of Ganesha was healed. Devi Parvati became satisfied and her anger subsided. She took Parashurama on her lap and blessed him. Parashurama then eulogized Lord Shiva, Devi Uma, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Sri Krishna and Devi Radha. All of them blessed him.

Finally Parashurama with joyful mind set of towards the hermitage of his father.
