River Sarayu

(Valmiki Ramayana - Bala Kanda - 5, 8, 22)

Sri Rama with VishwamitraMeditation: I meditate on river Sarayu flowing through Ayodhya.

Ayodhya is situated on the banks of river Sarayu: The city of Ayodhya (within the kingdom of Koshala) is situated on the banks of river Sarayu.

King Dasharatha performs a yagna (to get a son) on the bank of river Sarayu: King Dasharatha, who was childless, performed a yagna to get a son, on the northern bank of river Sarayu.

Sri Rama receives the Bala and Atibala mantras on the bank of river Sarayu: Sri Rama received the Bala and Atibala mantras from sage Vishwamitra while travelling along the southern bank of river Sarayu. Sage Vishwamitra told Sri Rama about the efficacy of these mantras. These mantras give great power and keep away tiredness and fatigue, and also attacks from demons. These mantras also enhance the power of understanding and speech, whereby one can give suitable response to arguments. Hunger and thirst does not affect one who practices these mantras.

Sri Rama spends a night on the bank of river Sarayu: After receiving the Bala and Atibala mantras, Sri Rama and Lakshmana spent that night on the bank of river Sarayu sleeping on grass beds.
