Ch 11: Ruru and Dundubha: Dundubha advising Ruru about the benevolent nature of brahmanas towards all creatures. As an example, mentioning about the Snake-Sacrifice of Janamejaya where brahmana Astika saved the snakes. Then Dundubha disappearing.
Ch 12: Sarpa-Yagna: Ruru asking his father about the Snake-Sacrifice of Janmejaya. His father telling him.
1.5. Adi Parva - Astika Parva (Chapters 13-58)
Ch 13: Jaratkaru: (Story of Astika begins) Father was ascetic Jaratkaru. Dynasty of Yayavaras. Jaratkaru going for pilgrimage. Seeing ancestors hanging upside down. Ancestors telling Jaratkaru to marry and beget a son for their redemption. Jaratkaru promising to marry a girl of the same name.
Ch 14: Jaratkaru and Vasuki: Jaratkaru wandering over the earth seeking a wife. Vasuki appearing and giving his younger sister (also named Jaratkaru) for marriage. Jaratkaru's marriage.
Ch 15: Astika and Nagas: Mother of snake cursing them to be burnt by Agni. To neutralise the curse, Vasuki giving his sister in marriage to Jaratkaru. Birth of Astika. Astika delivering the Nagas. Astika also delivering his fathers by begetting offspring. Jaratkaru going to heaven.
Ch 16: Birth of Aruna and Garuda: Sage Kashyapa giving boons to Kadru and Vinata. Kadru getting thousand Nagas as children. Vinata breaking one egg prematurely. Half-developed Aruna cursing mother to be slave and rising to the sky. Garuda taking birth from the second egg.
Ch 17: Kadru, Vinata and Uchchaihsravas: Horse Uchchaihsravas (which emerged from Samudra Manthana) approaching near Kadru and Vinata.
Ch 17: Samudra Manthana: (Story of Samudra Manthana begins) Celestials assembling on mountain Meru for Amrita. Sri Narayana asking them to perform Samudra Manthana.
Ch 18: Samudra Manthana, Kurma and Mohini: Ananta tearing mountain Mandara and placing it on Ocean. Tortoise king (Kurma Avatara) bearing it. Vasuki becoming the cord. Emergence of Moon, Lakshmi, Soma, Uchchaihsravas, Kaustubha, Dhanvantari with Amrita, Airavata, Kalakuta. Lord Shiva swallowing the Kalakuta. Appearance of Mohini Avatara.
Ch 19: Samudra Manthana, Mohini and Nara-Narayana: Mohini giving Amrita to Devas. Head of Rahu cut. Battle between Devas and Asuras. Appearance of Nara and Narayana with bow and chakra. Victory of the Devas.
Ch 20: Kadru, Vinata and Uchchaihsravas: Competition between Kadru and Vinata about the color of Uchchaihsravas. Kadru telling her sons to transform into black hairs and cover the tail of Uchchaihsravas. Sons refusing. Kadru cursing his sons to be burnt by Agni. Lord Brahma and gods approving the curse. Brahma imparting sage Kashyapa the knowledge of neutralising poison.
Ch 21: Samudra: Description of Samudra.
Ch 22: Nagas and Ucchaishravas: Nagas making the tail of Ucchaishravas black to get relief from the curse of Kadru. Kadru and Vinata moving in the sky over the ocean to see Ucchaishravas. Description of Samudra.
Ch 23: Kadru, Vinata, Devas and Garuda: Kadru and Vinata crossing the Ocean. Seeing Ucchaishravas. Defeat of Vinata. Vinata becoming the slave of Kadru. Appearance of Garuda. Stuti of Garuda by Devas. Garuda reducing his energy.
Ch 24: Garuda, Aruna and Surya: Garuda reducing his size. Surya was angry due to enmity with Rahu and deciding to destroy the world with his heat. Garuda taking Aruna on his back, crossing the Ocean and placing Aruna in front of Surya, thus saving the world.
Ch 25: Kadru, Vinata and Indra: Kadru telling Vinata to carry her. Vinata telling Garuda to carry the Nagas. Nagas begin to get scorched by Surya. Kadru invoking Indra for rain. Stuti of Indra.
Ch 26: Ramaniyaka Island: Indra pouring rain. The Nagas becoming happy. The Nagas with mother reaching the island of Ramaniyaka.
Ch 27: Garuda and Nagas: Description of the beauty of the forest of Ramaniyaka. The abode of Makaras. Lavana Samudra. Garuda asking Nagas the means to become free from slavery. Nagas telling him to bring Amrita.
Ch 28: Garuda for Amrita and Vinata: Garuda asking Vinata what to eat. Vinata telling to eat the Nishadas (fishermen) but never to harm a brahmana. Vinata telling about the qualities of brahmanas. Garuda devouring Nishadas on the way.
Ch 29: Garuda for Amrita and Kashyapa: Garuda saving a brahmana and his Nishada wife whom he devoured. Brahmana praising Garuda. Garuda meeting his father Kashyapa and asking for a source of food. Kashyapa telling the story of sage Vibhavasu and his brother Supritika who became elephant and tortoise by mutual curse on the issue of separation of property. Garuda taking them as food and sitting on the branch of a divine Banyan tree. The branch breaking.
Ch 30: Garuda for Amrita and Valakhilyas: Seeing the Valakhilya Rishis performing penances by hanging upside down from the branch, Garuda holding the branch on his beaks and flying. The Rishis giving him the name Garuda (bearer of great weight). Garuda coming to sage Kashyapa who propitiates the Valakhilyas. The Valakhilyas leaving the branch and going to the Himavat mountain. Sage Kashyapa telling Garuda about a snow-covered mountain bereft of human beings where to throw the branch. Garuda going there, throwing the branch, and eating the tortoise and the elephant. Evil omens arise in heaven. The Devas knowing the cause from Brihaspati surrounding the Amrita for protecting it.
Ch 31: Garuda, Aruna and Valakhilyas: Story of the birth of Garuda and Aruna from the yagna of the Valakhilyas, who were derided by Indra. Kashyapa appeases the Valakhilyas and prevents a second Indra.
Ch 32: Garuda, Amrita and Devas: Battle of Garuda with the Devas. Garuda defeating the Devas. Extinguishing the fire around the Amrita by bringing waters of rivers.
Ch 33: Garuda, Amrita, Vishnu and Indra: Garuda dodging a sharp rotating steel wheel protecting the Amrita by making his body smaller. Garuda throwing dust on the eyes of two protecting serpents and slaying them. Then taking the Amrita starts returning without drinking it himself. Seeing his self-denial, Lord Vishnu meeting him on the way and granting him two boons: Garuda always staying above him as emblem in flag and becoming immortal without drinking Amrita. Garuda also giving a boon: He will serve as carrier of Lord Vishnu. Indra attacking Garuda on the way with his thunderbolt. Garuda respecting sage Dadhichi casting one of his feathers due to which he came to be known as Suparna. Indra then seeking eternal friendship with Garuda and wanting to know his strength.
Ch 34: Garuda, Nagas and Kusha grass: Garuda telling Indra that by a single feather he can bear the entire Earth. Garuda accepting friendship of Indra. Indra giving him boon that serpents will be his food. Garuda bringing the Amrita to the Nagas and placing it on Kusha grass. Releasing Vinata from slavery. Indra stealing the Amrita. Nagas licking the Kusa grass and their tongues getting splitted. The Kusha grass becoming sacred by the contact with Amrita.
Ch 35: Naga names: Names of the main Nagas. Sesha, Vasuki, Airavata, Takshaka, Karkotaka, Dhananjaya, Kalakeya, ... Elapatra ...
Ch 36: Sesha: After hearing the curse of mother, Sesha performing penance at Gandhamadana, Badari, Gokarna, Pushkara and foot of Himavat. Lord Brahma appearing and telling him to ask for a boon. Sesha wanting to be separated from his wicked brothers and live a life of virtue and asceticism. Lord Brahma giving the boon and telling him to bear the Earth to make it steady.
Ch 37: Vasuki: After hearing the curse of mother, Vasuki discussing with other Nagas to get redeemed from the curse.
Ch 38: Elapatra: Elapatra (Naga) telling about the way of deliverance he heard from Lord Brahma. Only sinful serpents would be destroyed and not the virtuous ones. Also, the son of sage Jaratkaru (named Astika) married to sister of Vasuki will deliver the serpents.
Ch 39: Brahma: After Samudra Manthana, the gods approaching Lord Brahma and telling him about the anxiety of Vasuki. Lord Brahma telling that whatever Elapatra has communicated is true. Vasuki should give his sister in marriage to Jaratkaru.
Ch 40: Parikshit and sage Shamika: About the name Jaratkaru. Jara means waste, Karu means huge. Jaratkaru means huge body reduced by penances. Story of king Parikshit (son of Abhimanyu). Parikshit going for hunting. Chasing a pierced deer. Entering into the hermitage of a sage (Shamika). Enquiring about the deer. The sage not responding due to the vow of silence. The king in anger putting a dead snake around his shoulders. Krisha informing the son Shringi.
Ch 41: Parikshit and Shringi: Shringi cursing Parikshit to die within seven days through Takshaka. His father (Shamika Rishi) was not pleased and telling about the role of king.
Ch 42: Kashyapa and Takshaka: Sage Shamika counseling Shringi to give up anger. He then sending disciple Gaurmukha to the king informing about the curse. Parikshit erecting a mansion on a solitary column. It is guarded day and night. Parikshit beginning to stay there. Kashyapa on the seventh day coming to heal the king after snake-bite. Takshaka in the guise of a brahmin conversing with him.
Ch 43: Kashyapa and Takshaka: Takshaka challenging sage Kashyapa to revive a Banyan tree reduced to ashes by his poison. Kashyapa reviving the Banyan tree by his vidya. Takshaka offering wealth to Kashyapa telling him to return. Kashyapa through meditation determining than the lifespan of the king has run out. Kashyapa returning with the wealth. Takshaka sending Nagas as brahmanas with fruits and kusa grass. King Parikshit eating a fruit from which Takshaka comes out as an insect and bites him.
Ch 44: Parikshit dying and Janamejaya: King Parikshit dying. The ministers coronating his minor son Janamejaya. Later marrying him to Vapushtama, the daughter of Suvarnavarmana, the king of Kashi.
Ch 45: Jaratkaru and Pitris: Jaratkaru seeing his Pitris hanging upside down. They telling about their misery due to lack of son of Jaratkaru.
Ch 46: Jaratkaru and Vasuki: Jaratkaru revealing his identity to the Pitris. Telling them that he would marry only a girl of the same name whom he does not have to maintain. Jaratkaru searching but was unsuccessful. Then declaring his intentions to creatures inside a forest. Vasuki appearing with his daughter.
Ch 47: Jaratkaru: Marriage of Rishi Jaratkaru with Jaratkaru, the sister of Vasuki. Jaratkaru serving her husband. Conceiving at proper time. Rishi Jaratkaru leaving her after she conceives due to an incident.
Ch 48: Birth of Astika: Birth of Astika. Studying Vedas with sage Chyavana. The name Astika due to "There is" spoken by Jaratkaru while leaving.
Ch 49: Janamejaya: Janamejaya asking about his father's death. The ministers telling about the good qualities of king Parikshit (son of Abhimanyu) and the cause of his death. The name Parikshit (born in an extinct line).
Ch 50: Janamejaya: Story of the death of Parikshit. Shringi cursing Parikshit. Takshaka biting Parikshit. Janamejaya deciding to take revenge.
Ch 51: Sarpa-Yagna: Janamejaya preparing for the Snake-Sacrifice (Sarpa-Yagna). Calling the priest and the Ritwiks. Building the sacrificial platform. However, a builder says that the sacrifice will not complete (due to soil and time of building).
Ch 52: Sarpa-Yagna: The Snake-Sacrifice begins. With the uttering of the mantras, snakes in hundreds and thousands starting to fall into the fire, according to their mother's curse.
Ch 53: Sarpa-Yagna: Chandabhargava was the Hotri. Kautsa was the Udgatri (chanter of Vedic hymns). Jaimini was the Brahmana. Sarngarva and Pingala were the Adhvaryus. Vyasa and others were the Sadasyas. Takshaka taking refuge in Indra who assures him. Vasuke telling his sister to call Astika.
Ch 54: Sarpa-Yagna and Astika: Astika hearing about his purpose from his mother. Assuring Vasuki. Going to the Snake-Sacrifice. The door-keepers initially preventing him, then allowing to enter. Astika praising the king, Ritwiks, Sadasyas, and also the sacred fire.
Ch 55: Sarpa-Yagna and Astika: Astika praising the king, Ritwiks, Sadasyas, and also the sacred fire.
Ch 56: Sarpa-Yagna and Astika: King deciding to confer boon on Astika. Consulting with the Sadasyas. The mantras bring Indra along with Takshaka. While Takshaka was about to fall in the fire, Astika wanting the boon of ending the Sacrifice with no more snakes falling in the fire. The king urging him for some other boon but Astika remaining steadfast. Sadasyas finally approving his boon.
Ch 57: Sarpa-Yagna and Astika: Names of the major snakes burnt in the Sarpa-Yagna.
Ch 58: Sarpa-Yagna and Astika: Astika making Takshaka hang in the mid-air without falling in the fire. End of Snake-Sacrifice. The king and the snakes confering boon on Astika.
1.6. Adi Parva - Amshavatarana Parva: (Chapters 59-64)
Ch 59: Sarpa-Yagna and Mahabharata: Shaunaka telling Suta to narrate the Mahabharata, which Vyasa (of ocean-like mind and soul purified by yoga) recited during the Snake-Sacrifice.
Ch 60: Sarpa-Yagna, Vyasa and Mahabharata: Sage Vyasa coming to the Snake-Sacrifice of Janamejaya. Janamejaya adoring him. Then asking him to narrate the story of Mahabharata. Sage Vyasa telling his disciple Vaishampayana to narrate the Mahabharata.
Ch 61: Sarpa-Yagna, Vaishampayana and Mahabharata: Vaishampayana narrating the summary of Mahabharata highlighting the hostilities of the Pandavas and the Kauravas.
Ch 62: Sarpa-Yagna, Vaishampayana and Mahabharata: King Janamejaya telling Vaishampayana to narrate the Mahabharata in full. Vaishampayana telling the glory of Mahabharata composed by sage Vyasa by regularly rising (in the morning) for three years.
Ch 63: Uparichara Vasu, Satyavati, Parashara and Vyasa: The story of king Uparichara (Vasu). Indra giving him boons. From his seed twins taking birth within a fish. The son Matsya (kept by king) and daughter Satyavati (given to fisherman). Sage Vyasa taking birth from Satyavati and sage Parashara. Brief details of the births of others.
Ch 64: Hari to incarnate: Sri Parashurama destroying the Kshatriyas 21 times. Then the Kshatriya wives having virtuous children through Brahmanas. Good times. Then Asuras taking birth. Earth burdened by sins goes to Brahma. Brahma asking the Devas to procreate on Earth from their parts. Indra requesting Hari to incarnate. Hari accedes.
1.7. Adi Parva - Sambhava Parva: (Chapters 65-140)
Ch 65: Celestials: Celestials taking birth. Slaying Danavas, Rakshasas, Gandharvas, Snakes, other man-eaters etc.
Ch 65: 6 Spiritual sons of Brahma: (1) Marichi, (2) Atri, (3) Angiras, (4) Pulastya, (5) Pulaha and (6) Kratu. Kashyapa was the son of Marichi.
Ch 65: 13 daughters of Daksha (married to Kashyapa): (1) Aditi, (2) Diti, (3) Danu, (4) Kala, (5) Danayu, (6) Simhika, (7) Krodha, (8) Pradha, (9) Vishwa, (10) Vinata, (11) Kapila, (12) Muni, and (13) Kadru. Descendants of them.
1- Aditi (12 Adityas): (1) Dhata, (2) Mitra, (3) Aryama, (4) Shakra, (5) Varuna, (6) Ansha, (7) Bhaga, (8) Vivasvan, (9) Pusha, (10) Savita, (11) Tvashta, and (12) Vishnu.
2- Diti (Daityas): Son Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu had five sons. Prahlada, Sanhlada, Anuhlada, Sibi and Bashkala. Sons of Prahlada are Virochana, Kumbha and Nikumbha. Son of Virochana is Bali. Son of Bali is Mahakala (Bana).
3- Danu (Danavas): Viprachitti, Sambara, Namuchi, Puloma, Asiloma, Keshi, Durjaya, Ayashira, Ashwashira, Ashwashanku, Gaganamurdha, Vegavan, Ketuman, Swarbhanu, Ashwa, Ashwapati, Vrishaparva, Ajaka, Ashwagriva, Sukshma, Tuhunda, Ekapada, Ekachakra, Virupaksha, Hara, Ahara, Nichandra, Nikumbha, Kupata, Kapata, Sharabha, Shalabha, Surya, Chandrama. Also, Ekaksha, Mritapa, Pralamba, Naraka, Vatapi, Shatrutapana, Shatha, Gavishtha, Vanayu, Dirghajihva.
4- Kala: Vinashana, Krodha, Krodhahanta, and Krodhashatru.
5- Danayu: Vikshara, Bala, Vira, and Vritra.
6- Simhika: Rahu, Suchandra, Chandraharta, and Chandrapramardana.
7- Krodha (Krura): Crooked and wicked as herself.
8- Pradha (Gandharvas, Apsaras): (Daughters) Anavadhya, Manu, Vansha, Asura, Marganapriya, Anupa, Subhaga and Bhasi. 10- Vinata (Garuda etc.): Tarkshya, Arishtanemi, Garuda, Aruna and Aruni and Varuni.
11- Kapila (Kine etc.): The Brahmanas, kine, Gandharvas, and Apsaras.
12- Muni (Gandharvas): Bhimasena, Ugrasena, Suparna, Varuna, Gopati, Dhritarashtra, Suryavarcha, Satyavag, Arkaparna, Prayuta, Bhima, Chitraratha, Shalishira, Parjanya, Kali, Narada
13- Kadru (Punnagas): Sesha or Ananta, Vasuki, Takshaka, Kurma, and Kulika
Ch 66: 11 Rudras (Sons of Rudra): Sthanu (Rudra) born of Brahma. 11 Rudras are (1) Mrigavyadha, (2) Sarpa, (3) Niriti, (4) Ajaikapada, (5) Ahirbudhnya, (6) Pinaki, (7) Dahana, (8) Ishwara, (9) Kapali, (10) Sthanu, (11) Bhaga.
Ch 66: Sages: Sons of Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha and Kratu.
Ch 66: Daksha and daughters: Daksha originating from right toe of Brahma and wife of Daksha from the left toe of Brahma. 50 daughters of Daksha (Putrikas). 10 married to Dharma, 27 married to Chandra and 13 married to Kashyapa.
Ch 66: Prajapati: Muni is the son of Brahma. Prajapati is the son of Muni.
Ch 66: 8 Vasus (Sons of Prajapati): (1) Dhara, (2) Dhruva, (3) Soma, (4) Aha, (5) Anila, (6) Anala, (7) Pratyusha, and (8) Prabhasa.
Ch 66: Dharma: Born from the right breast of Brahma. Sons of Dharma: Shama, Kama and Harsha. By their energy they are supporting the worlds. The wife of Kama was Rati. Wife of Shama was Prapti. Wife of Harsha was Nanda.
Ch 66: Ashwins: Tvashta of the form of Vadava (a mare) became the wife of Savita. She gave birth to the Ashwins.
Ch 66: 33 gods: 8 Vasus, 11 Rudras, 12 Adityas, Prajapati, and Vashatkara.
Ch 66: Ganas of gods: The Rudras, Sadhyas, Marutas, Vasus, Bhargavas and the Vishwedevas are each reckoned as a Paksha. Garuda, Aruna, Brihaspati are Adityas. The Ashwins, annual plants and animals are Guhyakas.
Ch 66: Bhrigu, Shukra and Chyavana: Bhrigu from breast of Brahma. Shukra is the son of Bhrigu who became a planet. Shukra sustains life and also guru of both Daityas and Suras. Chyavana was another son of Bhrigu, and Arushi (daughter of Manu) was his wife. From them Aurva was born. Aurva begot Richika. Richika begot Jamadagni. Parashurama was the son of Jamadagni.
Ch 66: Dhata, Vidhata and Lakshmi: Sons of Brahma who lived with Manu. Their sister is Lakshmi. The mind-born sons of Lakshmi are the sky-ranging horses.
Ch 66: Shukra and Devi: Devi was the daughter of Shukra. She is the eldest wife of Varuna. She has a son named Bala and daughter named Sura.
Ch 66: Adharma: Adharma was born (of Sura) when creatures devoured each other. His wife is Niriti. Rakshasas are born of Niriti and are called Nairitas. She also had sons Bhaya (fear), Mahabhaya (terror), and Mrityu (Death). Mrityu had no wife or son.
Ch 66: Tamra: 5 daughters. (1) Kaki, (2) Shyeni, (3) Bhasi, (4) Dhritarashtri and (5) Shuki

Ch 75: Pururavas, Nahusha and Yayati Lineage:
- Vivasvat: Son of Kashyapa and Aditi
- Yama and Manu: Sons of Vivasvat. Human beings are born in Manu's race, therefore they are called Manavas.
- Ikshvaku and Ila: Children of Manu
- Pururavas: Pururavas was born of Ila. Quarrelled with the Brahmanas. Destroyed by curse of Sanatkumara.
- Ayus: Pururavas and Urvasi begot 6 sons. Ayus, Dhimat, Amavasu, Dhridhayus, Vanayus, and Satayus.
- Nahusha: Ayus and daughter of Swarbhanu begot 4 sons named Nahusha, Vriddhasarman, Rajingaya, and Anenas.
- Yayati: Sons of Nahusha: Yati, Yayati, Sanyati, Ayati, and Dhruva.
- Yadu and Puru: Sons of Yayati: Yadu and Turvasu from Devayani. Drahyu, Anu, and Puru from Sharmishtha. Yayati exchanged his youth with Puru and enjoyed for 1000 years but his appetite remained unsatiated. Wisdom dawned upon him and he exchanged back his youth with Puru.
Ch 76: Kacha and Shukracharya: The story of Kacha (son of Brihaspati) learning Mritasanjeevani vidya from Shukracharya. Shukracharya pronouncing a curse on Brahmanas who drink.
Ch 77: Kacha and Devayani: Devayani (daughter of Shukracharya) asking Kacha (son of Brihaspati) to marry her. Kacha refusing. Devayani cursing him that his knowledge will not bear fruit. Kacha cursing her back that no Rishi's son shall accept her hand for marriage.
Ch 78: Devayani, Sharmishtha and Yayati: Celestials learning the Mritasanjeevani vidya from Kacha. Indra mixing the garments of celestials sporting in a lake in the gardens of the Gandharva Chitraratha. Quarrel between Devayani (daughter of Shukra) and Sharmishtha (daughter of Vrishaparvan). Sharmishtha pushing Devayani in a well. Yayati coming for hunting, rescuing her, and going away. Shukra pacifying her.
Ch 79: Devayani and Shukracharya: Shukracharya telling about the merit of subduing anger. Devayani unsatisfied and deciding to leave.
Ch 80: Shukracharya, Vrishaparvan, Devayani and Sharmishtha: Shukracharya going to Vrishaparvan and deciding to leave. Vrishaparvan granting the wish of Devayani. Sharmishtha becoming the slave of Devayani and Shukracharya.
Ch 81: Devayani, Sharmishtha and Yayati: Devayani and Sharmishtha going to forest. Meeting king Yayati. Devayani telling Yayati to marry her who once held her hand while rescuing her from well. Shukracharya approving. Yayati marrying Devayani, and getting Sharmishtha as maid with two thousand other maids.

Shukracharya cursing Yayati to become old, but saying that he will have the ability to transfer his decrepitude to his son, who will then become his successor.
Ch 84: Yayati and Puru: Yayati approaching sons Yadu, Turvasu, Druhu and Anu separately to exchange their youth (for thousand years) with his old age. They do not agree. Yayati cursing them all. Puru agreeing. Yayati giving boon to him.
Ch 85: Yayati and Puru: After thousand years, Vairagya dawning on king Yayati after much enjoyment. Yayati saying that desires are not gratified by indulgences, but they only flame up like fire with libations of sacrificial butter. Yayati giving back his youth to Puru and coronating him as king. Then retiring to forest.

Ch 86: Yayati and Indra: Yayati performing Tapasya in the woods for thousand years and attaining heaven. But Indra hurling him down from heaven and he remaining in the firmament. He again entering heaven with Vasuman, Ashtaka, Pratarddana and Sibi.
Ch 87: Yayati and Indra: Yayati telling Indra about his instructions to Puru regarding Dharma and good conduct.
Ch 88: Yayati and Indra: Indra asking Yayati to whom is he equal in penance. Yayati telling that no men, celestials, Gandharvas and Rishis are equal to him in penance. Indra saying that his virtues have diminished due to his disrgarding the merits of others. Yayati falling from heaven but Yayati asking the boon that he should fall among the virtuous. Yayati falling among the sages. Sage Ashtaka enquiring about him.
Ch 89: Yayati and Ashtaka: Conversation between Yayati and Ashtaka. About vanity, destiny. Yayati, the maternal grandfather of Ashtaka. Yayati telling about the celestial regions he stayed before falling.
Ch 90: Yayati and Ashtaka: Conversation between Yayati and Ashtaka. {Krita Yuga}. Yayati telling the reason why he has fallen. Self-praise leads to hell called Bhauma (Earth-hell). Attacked by Rakshsasa in the form of sons, grandsons etc. that withdraw their hearts from emancipation. Yayati telling about the way of rebirth. Yayati telling about seven gates to heaven which are all destroyed by vanity.
Ch 91: Yayati and Ashtaka: Conversation between Yayati and Ashtaka. Yayati telling about the duties of Brahmachari, Grihasta, Vanaprastha and Muni.
Ch 92: Yayati and Ashtaka: Conversation between Yayati and Ashtaka. Yayati telling that a man of knowledge attain to salvation before a yogi. Ashtaka and Pratardana trying to give their ascetic merits but Yayati denies.

Ch 96: Curse on Mahabhisha and Vasus: King Mahabhisha of the Ikshvaku race performing thousand horse sacrifices and hundred Rajasuyas and attaining heaven. Brahma cursing Mahabhisha to be born on earth for rudely staring at Ganga while worshipping him. At the same time sage Vasishtha cursing the Vasus to be born on earth for crossing him during twilight worship. Vasus making an arrangement with Ganga to be born as her sons from Shantanu.
Ch 97: Pratipa, Ganga and Shantanu: Ganga appearing to king Pratipa while he was doing penance at the source of river Ganga. King Pratipa accepting Ganga as his daughter-in-law. King Pratipa through austerities in old age getting son Shantanu (so named because his father had controlled his passions). Shantanu was Mahabhisha who was cursed. Pratipa coronating Shantanu and retiring to woods telling about the celestial damsel and her conditions for marriage. Shantanu meeting Ganga while hunting and telling her to be his wife.
Ch 98: Birth of Bhishma: Ganga marrying Shantanu. Vasus taking birth from Ganga and she redeeming them by throwing seven of them in the river. Shantanu preventing Ganga from throwing the eighth child (Bhishma or Gangadatta). Ganga preparing to leave Shantanu as per the agreement.
Ch 99: Vasishtha, Nandini and Dyu: Ganga telling Shantanu the brief story of sage Vasishtha and Nandini. Dyu stealing cow Nandini. Vasishtha cursing the Vasus, and Dyu was born as Bhishma (Gangeya and Devavrata). Ganga leaving with her son.
Ch 100: Vows of Bhishma: Praise of Shantanu. Ganga returning Devavrata (Bhishma) to Shantanu when Shantanu goes for hunting. Shantanu making Devavrata the heir-apparent. Shantanu meeting Gandhavati (Satyavati) and wanting to marry her. Her fisherman father placing the condition that her son should become the king. Devavrata taking the terrible vows of relinquishing his position as king and remaining a brahmacharya for life (sonless). Devavrata becoming known as Bhishma (the terrible). Shantanu giving him the boon of death by will.
Ch 101: Chitrangada and Vichitravirya: King Shantanu giving birth to Chitrangada and Vichitravirya from Satyavati. Bhishma installing Chitrangada as the king but he was slain by the king of Gandharvas at Kurukshetra (on the banks of river Saraswati). Bhishma then installing minor Vichitravirya as the king who rules the kingdom under the guidance of Bhishma.
Ch 102: Amba, Ambalika, Ambika; death of Vichitravirya: Bhishma abducting the three daughters of Kashiraja from Swayamvara by defeating all the kings and finally king Shalya. The eldest daughter Amba telling Bhishma that he mentally chose the king of Shaubhya as his husband. Bhishma permitting Amba to do as she liked. Bhishma marrying Ambika and Ambalika to Vichitravirya. However, Vichitravirya dying after seven years inflicted by disease phthisis.
Ch 103: Satyavati and Bhishma: Satyavati asking Bhishma to accept kingdom and produce sons. Bhishma disagreeing due to his vow and adherence to truth. Bhishma trying to think of other means to continue the lineage.
Ch 104: Story of Dirghatamas: Bhishma suggesting Satyavati that previously there were instances where Brahmanas continued the lineage of the Kshatriyas. Giving example of time after Parashurama destroyed the Kshatriyas 21 times. Giving another example of sage Dirghatamas. Dirghatamas was born of Mamata when she was pregnant and approached by Brihaspati. Mamata was the wife of sage Utathya, the elder brother of Brihaspati. Dirghatamas raised sons from the queen of king Vali named Sudeshna (Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Pundra and Suhma). Dirghatamas also pronounced a curse that woman should have one husband only.
Ch 105: Bhishma, Satyavati and Vyasa: Bhishma suggesting Satyavati to bring a brahmana with offer of wealth to raise offsprings from the wife of Vichitravirya. Satyavati telling Bhishma the story of the birth of Vyasa and wants Vyasa to raise the offsprings. Bhishma approving. Satyavati bringing sage Vyasa for producing sons. Sage Vyasa agreeing.
Ch 106: Birth of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura: Ambika closing her eyes seeing the appearance of Vyasa. So his son (Dhritarashtra) was born blind. Ambalika becoming pale with fear seeing Vyasa. So his son (Pandu) was born pale. Satyavati then sending a maid servant who greeted Vyasa. Vyasa becoming pleased with her and the wise Vidura was born of her. Vidura was Dharma born on earth by the curse of sage Mandavya.
Ch 107: Mandavya: The story of sage Mandavya being wrongly impaled by the officers of the king when they discover thieves in his hermitage.
Ch 108: Mandavya and Dharmaraja: The king coming to know of the truth and asking forgiveness from the sage. The king freeing him from the stake but a small part of the stake remaining within his body (Ani-Mandavya) with which he practised penance. Mandavya cursing Dharmaraja for his disproportionate punishment. Also establishing that an act committed below the age of fourteen should not be considered a sin. Cursed by the sage, Dharmaraja was born as Vidura.
Ch 109: Pandu becoming king: After the birth of Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidura; Kurujangala, Kurukshetra, and the Kurus growing in prosperity under the management of Bhishma. Pandu becoming the king due to the blindness of Dhritarashtra.
Ch 110: Dhritarashtra marrying Gandhari: Bhishma marrying Dhritarashtra to Gandhari, the daughter of Suvala and sister of Shakuni. Gandhari had a boon from Hara that she will have hundred sons.
Ch 111: Story of Kunti and Karna: Sura, the father of Vasudeva giving his daughter Pritha to his friend Kuntibhoja. Kunti once pleasing sage Durvasa by her services and getting mantras for getting sons from celestials. Kunti testing the Surya mantra and getting Karna as a son endowed with Kavacha and Kundala (but her maidenhood was preserved). Kunti flowing the child in water. Radha and her husband adopting the child and naming him Vasusena (born with wealth). Later when Indra takes away his Kavacha and Kundala he becomes known as Karna (the cutter of his own cover).
Ch 112: Pandu marrying Kunti: Kunti accepting Pandu in the swayamvara. Their marriage.
Ch 113: Pandu marrying Madri; Digvijaya: Bhishma going to the king of Madra and getting his sister Madri for Pandu by giving him gifts in large quantity. Marriage of Pandu and Madri. King Pandu setting out for Digvijaya. Making all the kings his vassal. Returning to Hastinapura with much wealth.
Ch 114: Pandu retiring in Himalayas; marriage of Vidura: With the wealth of Pandu, Dhritarashtra performing five great sacrifices. After sometime, Pandu retiring to the woods in the Himavat mountain along with his wives Kunti and Madri. Bhishma marrying the daughter of king Devaka to Vidura. Vidura begetting many children from her.
Ch 115: Dhritarashtra begetting hundred sons: Dhritarashtra begetting hundred sons from Gandhari and a daughter. Also begetting a son called Yuyutsu from a Vaishya maid. Frightful omens appearing during the birth of Duryodhana. Vidura and brahmanas advice Dhritarashtra to abandon that child since he will be the exterminator of the race. Dhritarashtra however keeping the son. Yudhishthira was eldest. Duryodhana was born during the time of Bhima.
Ch 116: Duhsala: The story of the birth of Duhsala, the daughter of Gandhari.
Ch 117: 100 sons of Dhritarashtra: The names of the hundred sons of Dhritarashtra. Duhsala married to Jayadratha.
Ch 118: Pandu cursed: Pandu killing Kindama Muni in the guise of a deer while mating. The sage cursing Pandu that he will also die as also his wife if he lustfully touches her. Pandu repenting.
Ch 119: Pandu renouncing the world: Pandu along with his two wives renouncing the world and taking up the life of austerities. Pandu going to Nagasata mountain, Chaitraratha, crossing Kalakuta and crossing Himavat arriving at Gandhamadana. Then going to lake Indradyumna and crossing mountain Hansakuta arriving at the mountain of hundred peaks (Sata-sringa).
Ch 120: Pandu, Kunti and ascetics: Pandu attaining great ascetic prowess and becoming the favourite of the sages. Pandu telling about the four debts to the sages and repenting that being sonless his debt to the Pitris is not fulfilled. The sages through prophetic vision says that Pandu will have progeny. Pandu telling Kunti about the ten ways of getting a son and commanding her to get sons through a brahmana. Pandu telling the story of the daughter of Saradandayana.
Ch 121: Pandu and Kunti: Kunti expressing her unwillingness to embrace anyone apart from Pandu. Kunti then telling the tale of Bhadra getting sons from the dead body of her husband king Vyushitashwa.
Ch 122: Pandu and Kunti: Pandu telling Kunti about the previous practice of women not adhering to one husband. Pandu then telling about sage Swetaketu, the son of sage Uddalaka who established the rule of wife adhering to her husband only. Pandu also telling that Madayanti, the wife of Saudasa, commanded by her husband to raise offspring went unto Rishi Vasishtha. Kunti then telling Pandu about the mantras she received from sage Durvasa for raising offsprings from devas. Pandu telling Kunti to invoke Dharmadeva for getting a son established in righteousness.
Ch 123: Birth of Pandavas from Kunti: Kunti giving birth to Yudhishthira from Dharmadeva when Gandhari's conception was one year old. Kunti giving birth to Bhima from Vayudeva when Gandhari gives birth to Duryodhana. Pandu then performing austerities for one year to bring a son from Indra. Indra becoming pleased and giving him the boon of a son. Kunti giving birth to Arjuna from Indra. An incorporeal voice mentioning the greatness of the child. Rishis, Gandharvas, Apsaras and other celestials coming to see the child.
Ch 124: Birth of Pandavas from Madri: After the birth of the hundred sons of Dhritarashtra, Pandu telling Kunti to enable Madri to give birth to sons. Madri giving birth to Nakula and Sahadeva from the twin Ashwins. All the five Pandavas were born in the interval of one year.
Ch 125: Pandu dying; Madri dying: Pandu one day becoming filled with desire seeing Madri and dying during intercourse. Madri ascending the funeral pyre of Pandu and dying.
Ch 126: Ascetics taking Pandavas to Hastinapura: Ascetics taking Kunti and Pandavas to Hastinapura (along with the unburnt bodies of Pandu and Madri) and giving them to Bhishma and others (telling about the origin of their births). The ascetics then disappearing before the sight of the people.
Ch 127: Funeral rites of Pandu and Madri: Dhritarashtra telling Vidura to perform the funeral rites of Pandu and Madri with royal arrangements. The citizens mourning for twelve days.
Ch 128: Duryodhana drowning Bhima; Bhima drinking divya rasa in Naga Loka: After the shraddha, sage Vyasa telling Satyavati that days of happiness has ended and days of calamity has started. Vyasa suggesting Satyavati to go to forest and not witness the annihilation of his own race. Satyavati going to forest with Kausalya (Ambalika) and in proper time leaving her body and ascending to heaven. Bhima overpowering all Kauravas during the childhood plays. Duryodhana poisoning Bhima and pushing him in Ganga during water sports. Bhima reaching Nagaloka and the poison of snakes neutralizing his poisons. Bhima then laying the snakes down. The naga Aryaka was the grandfather of the father of Kunti. Aryaka embracing Bhima. The Nagas permitting Bhima to drink divya rasa, each vessel of which gives the strength of thousand elephants. Bhima drinking eight successive jars.
Ch 129: Duryodhana poisoning Bhima: Bhima arriving from Nagaloka. Telling about the incident of Duryodhana. Yudhishthira telling him to remain silent about it. Advising the brothers to remain vigilant and protect one another. Vidura also advising them now and then. Duryodhana again poisoning Bhima. Yuyutshu informing the Pandavas. Bhima swallowing and digesting the poison. Kauravas making other attempts but fails. Dhritarashtra appointing Gautama (Kripa) for training the Kauravas and Pandavas.
Ch 130: Story of Kripacharya: Saradwat was the son of sage Gautama born with arrows in hand. Indra sending Janapadi to break the penance of Saradwat. The vital fluid of Saradwat falling on a clump of heath from which Kripa and Kripi taking birth. King Shantanu bringing them up out of kripa (compassion). Kripacharya mastering the science of weapons and teaching them to the Pandavas, Kauravas and Yadavas.
Ch 130: Story of Dronacharya: Bhishma appointing Dronacharya (Son of Bharadwaja) for superior education of arms for the princes. Sage Bharadwaja feeling desire seeing apsara Ghritachi (while going to perform yagna on the bank of river Ganga). His vital fluid discharging and was held in a vessel called Drona. Dronacharya springing from there. Drupada, the son of Prishata was a childhood friend of Drona. Drona marrying Kripi, the son of Saradwat.
Ch 130: Story of Aswatthama: Drona giving birth to Aswatthama, who neighs like Ucchaihsravas during birth. Drona going to Parashurama who bestows his weapons to him.
Ch 131: Drupada humiliating Dronacharya: Dronacharya going to Panchala capital and meeting king Drupada as a friend. Drupada humiliating him. Dronacharya then going to Hastinapura.
Ch 131: Bhishma appointing Drona as teacher: At Hastinapura, Drona privately living in the house of Kripa. Drona meeting the princes and taking out their ball and ring from well. Bhishma honouring him and appointing him to train the princes.
Ch 132: Training of Pandavas; story of Ekalabhya: Drona taking a promise. Arjuna accepting. Arjuna excelling everyone in arms and devotion to arms. The story of Ekalabhya and his gurubhakti. Duryodhana and Bhima excelling in mace, Aswatthama excelling in the mysteries of the science of arms, Nakula and Sahadeva excelling in sword, Yudhishthira excelling as a car-warrior, Arjuna excelling in everything. Arjuna alone becoming an Atiratha (a car-warrior capable of fighting at one time with sixty thousand foes). Drona testing his pupils with artificial bird.
Ch 133: Arjuna getting Brahmashira weapon: Arjuna shooting down the artificial vulture. Arjuna rescuing Drona from an alligator and getting the Brahmashira weapon.
Ch 134: Displaying skills: Princes showing their skills in weapons.
Ch 135: Displaying skills: Bhima and Duryodhana showing their skills. Arjuna showing his skills with bows and arrows.
Ch 136: Karna entering Rangabhumi: Karna entering Rangabhumi. Performing all the feats Arjuna had displayed. Duryodhana embracing Karna and making him his friend. When Arjuna and Karna was ready for fighting, Kripa asking about the royal lineage of Karna. Karna becoming pale. Duryodhana making him the king of Anga.

Prishata, the king of Panchalas was a friend of Bharadwaja. His son was Drupada. Drupada played and studied with Drona as childhood friends. Drona going to Parashurama and getting his weapons. Drona going to Drupada and getting humiliated. Thereafter Drona going to Hastinapura and becoming the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas. As a guru-dakshina Drona asking them to capture the kingdom of Drupada. Pandavas defeating Drupada and bringing him to Drona. Drona returning half his kingdom seeking his friendship.

Ch 170: Arjuna defeating Angaraparna (Chaitraratha): Encounter of the Pandavas with gandharva Angaraparna on the bank of river Ganges. Arjuna defeating him. Angaraparna proposing to teach Arjuna the science of Chakshushi (Illusions). Also to give the Pandavas a hundred steeds to each brother. Angaraparna telling about many secrets of the gandharvas and suggesting them to take a brahmana as a priest and a wife.
Ch 171: Tapati and Samvarana: The gandharva telling Arjuna the story of Tapati and why Arjuna is called Tapatya. Tapati is the daughter of Vivasvat and younger sister of Savitri, devoted to ascetic penances and of great beauty. King Samvarana, the son of Riksha worshipping Surya deva. Surya deva deciding to bestow Tapati on Samvarana. King Samvarana meeting Tapati in the forest but she disappears. King Samvarana lamenting.
Ch 172: Tapati and Samvarana: The king falling down on the earth. Tapati reappearing. Samvarana praying the maiden to wed him according to Gandharva marriage. Tapati telling Samvarana to ask for her from his father Aditya.
Ch 173: About Vasishtha; Tapati: Samvarana falling down unconscious. Minister coming there. Sage Vasishtha coming there after twelve days of worship of the king. Vasishtha going to Surya Loka and bringing Tapati with her. Arjuna enquiring the gandharva about sage Vasishtha. Vasishtha was the mind-born son of Brahma and husband of Arundhati. He conquered desire and anger through ascetic penances. Therefore he did not exterminate the race of Vishwamitra for taking revenge of killing his sons, neither brought his sons back to life by transgressing the law of Yama. It was by obtaining Vasishtha as priest that the kings of Ikshwaku conquered the whole earth and conducted many sacrifices. The gandharva suggesting Arjuna to find a virtuous brahmana for priest.
Ch 174: Tapati and Samvarana: Samvarana roaming with Tapati for twelve years during which time there was no rain. Vasishtha bringing back Samvarana and Tapati; they performs sacrifice for twelve years. The kingdom again becomes revivified.
Ch 175: Vasishtha and Vishwamitra: The story of Vishwamitra and Vasishtha. Kusika Gadhi (Kanyakubja) Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra trying to take cow Nandini from Vasishtha by force. Nandini coming to Vasishtha who does not give up his forgiveness but says he has not abandoned her. Nandini producing army from her body and drives away the soldiers of Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra becoming disgusted realising that ascetic penance is greater than Kshatriya power. Vishwamitra becoming an ascetic.
Ch 176: Story of Kalmashapada: King Kalmashapada of Ikshwaku race going for hunting. Becoming tired. Seeing sage Shakti (one of the hundred sons of Vasistha) coming from opposite side. Telling him to stay away. Shakti telling that the eternal rule is that kings should make way for brahmanas. The king whipped the sage like a rakshasa. Shakti cursing Kalmashapada to become a rakshasa. Vishwamitra arriving there and remaining hidden. Vishwamitra ordering a rakshasa to enter the body of Kalmashapada. Vishwamitra going away. A brahmana asking the king for food with meat. Kalmashapada telling him to wait and sends a cook at night. The cook does not find meat. The king possessed by rakshasa telling him to feed human flesh. The brahmana cursing the king to become a flesh-eating rakshasa. The rakshasa king devouring Shakti and urged by Vishwamitra devouring the other sons of Vasishtha. Vasishtha bearing the grief with forgiveness not revenging on the race of Vishwamitra. Vasishtha trying to kill himself by throwing himself down from mount Meru, entering a fire and throwing himself in the sea. Unable to take his life, Vasishtha entering his asylum.
Ch 177: Kalmashapada and Vasishtha: Vasishtha leaving his hermitage in grief seeing it bereft of children. Vasishtha trying to fling himself in river Vipasa tying himself with cord, but the river breaks the cord and casts him ashore (so called Vipasa - the cord-breaker). Vasishtha throwing himself in Satadru, but the river thinking him as a mass of fire flew in a hundred different directions (so called Satadru). Vasishtha going back to his hermitage and hearing the son of Shakti reciting the Vedas lying in the womb of Adrisyanti (for twelve years). Vasishtha freeing Kalmashapada from his curse of becoming a rakshasa. Telling him not to insult brahmanas. Kalmashapada asking for a son. Vasishtha returning to Ayodhya with the king, uniting him with the queen, and she bearing the son Ashmaka who founded the city of Paudanya.
Ch 178: Birth of Parashara: Adrisyanti giving birth to Parashara (vivifier of the dead because Vasishtha desisted from committing suicide after hearing of him). Parashara hearing about the death of his father trying to destroy the whole creation. Vasishtha restraining him by telling the story of the enmity between the Kshatriyas and the Bhrigus. Kshatriyas lose eyesight while trying to destroy a womb in the thigh of a woman. They take refuge of the woman.
Ch 179: Birth of Aurva: The woman telling the Kshariyas to pray to the child whom she has borne in her thigh for hundred years. The kshatriyas praying to the child who becomes pleased. The child taking birth by tearing open the thigh of his mother, so called Aurva (thigh-born). The Kshatriyas regain their eyesight. Aurva performing penance to destroy the whole world to take revenge of his ancestors. The Pitris come there and tell him that they wilfully destroyed themselves through the Kshatriyas.
Ch 180: Aurva and Vadavamukha: Aurva telling the Pitris that his rage cannot go in vain and one who does not punish perpetuates sin. On the suggestion of Pitris, Aurva casting the fire of his wrath in the ocean. It becomes like a large horse's head called Vadavamukha.
Ch 181: Parashara and Rakshasa-Sacrifice: Parashara desisting from destroying the creation but performing a Rakshasa-Sacrifice and destroying many Rakshasas. Atri, Pulastya, Pulaha and Kratu coming there to stop the sacrifice. Pulastya telling Parashara to stop the sacrifice since peace is the highest virtue. Parashara stopping the sacrifice and casting the fire in the wood of the Himavat (which still consumes the Rakshasas, trees and stones).
Ch 182: Brahmani cursing Kalmashapada: Arjuna asking why Kalmashapada had a son through Vasishtha. The gandharva telling about the curse of a brahmani (Angirasi) when Kalmashapada as a rakshasa devours a brahmana when he was in union with his wife. The brahmani cursing Kalmashapada that he would be destroyed if he approaches his wife and that his wife Madayanati will have children through Vasishtha.
Ch 183: Dhaumya as priest: Arjuna asking the gandharva whom they should select as a priest. The gandharva telling about Dhaumya, the younger brother of Devala engaged in ascetic penances in the shrine of Utkochaka in the woods. The Pandavas go there and install Dhaumya as their priest (Purohita). Then they proceed towards the swayamvara of Draupadi.
1.12. Adi Parva - Swayamvara Parva (Chapters 184-192)
Ch 184: Pandavas towards Panchala: The Pandavas travelling towards Panchala. The brahmanas on the way tell about the swayamvara of Draupadi and the festivities to be held there.
Ch 185: Conditions of the Swayamvara: The Pandavas meeting Vyasa on the way and proceeding slowly towards Panchala staying within beautiful woods and fine lakes. Entering Panchala, they stay within the house of a potter. King Drupada desiring to have Arjuna as his son-in-law. Drupada arranging for a stiff bow to string and preparing a difficult target to shoot at in the sky which only Arjuna can succeed. The Pandavas entering the amphitheatre and sitting with the brahmanas. On the sixteenth day Draupadi entering the amphitheatre. Dhrishtadyumna announcing the conditions of the swayamvara.
Ch 186: Names of assembled kings: Dhrishtadyumna announcing the names of the assembled kings.
Ch 187: Draupadi rejecting Karna; others failing: Sri Krishna who was also there showing the Pandavas to Balarama. The kings trying to string the bow but fails to do so. Karna raising the bow, stringing it and placing the arrow, but Draupadi rejecting him for being a Suta, therefore Karna throwing away the bow. All the king including Shishupala, Jarasandha, Shalya and others failing. Finally Arjuna deciding to string the bow.
Ch 188: Arjuna shooting the mark: Arjuna stringing the bow and shooting the mark. Celestials showering flowers. The Pandavas leaving the amphitheatre with Arjuna.
Ch 189: Monarchs trying to slay Drupada: The monarchs becoming filled with wrath due to Drupada neglecting them in favour of a brahmana. The kings decide to slay Drupada. Drupada seeking protection from the brahmanas.
Ch 190: : Bhima and Arjuna standing to protect. Arjuna fighting with Karna and defeating him. Bhima defeating Shalya. Finally the monarchs stopping the fight and trying to find out who these brahmanas are. Kunti becoming anxious. Panadavas returning to the house of the potter with other brahmanas.
Ch 191: Krishna meeting Pandavas: Kunti saying from the room "Enjoy all what has been obtained". Yudhishthira declaring after recollecting the words of Vyasa that Draupadi will be the common wife of all of them. Sri Krishna and Balarama coming there and introducing themselves. Sri Krishna and Balarama touching the feet of Yudhishthira and Kunti, their father's sister. Yudhishthira asking him how he was able to recognise them.
Ch 192: Dhristadyumna and Pandavas: Dhristadyumna following the Pandavas to the potter's house and listening to their conversation in secret. Reporting to king Drupada.
1.13. Adi Parva - Vaivahika Parva (Chapters 193-199)
Ch 193: Drupada and Pandavas: Dhristadyumna narrating all he has seen and saying that he suspects them to be the Pandavas in disguise. Drupada becoming happy and sending his priest in disguise to ascertain this. The priest telling about the thoughts of king Drupada and trying to know their identity. Yudhishthira replying indirectly. Another messenger coming to inform them about the feast.
Ch 194: Drupada and Pandavas: Drupada arranging for a feast and keeping ready various royal utensils and weapons. Seeing the gait of the Pandavas (disguised as brahmanas), Drupada understanding that they are of royal birth.
Ch 195: About Draupadi as a common wife: Yudhishthira revealing to Drupada that they are Pandavas. Yudhishthira saying that Draupadi has to be the common wife of them since as a rule they need to share a jewel equally. Drupada expressing his apprehensions. Yudhishthira assuring Drupada that there would be no sin. Discussion among Yudhishthira, Kunti and Dhrishtadyumna. Vyasa coming.
Ch 196: Drupada and Vyasa: Vyasa asking them about their opinion of Draupadi being a common wife. Drupada saying that it is of doubtful morality. Dhrishtadyumna also saying the same. Yudhishthira saying that his tongue never utters an untruth and his heart is not inclined to sins. His heart has approved his mother's command and obedient to superiors is dharma. Yudhishthira giving example of Jatila marrying seven rishis. Also, an ascetic's daughter marrying ten Pracetas. Kunti fearing her speech will become untrue. Vyasa approving Yudhishthira's proposition and telling Drupada in private how polyandry came into existence and became extinct.
