Mandavya site: Pativrata wife preventing the Sun to rise:(Markandeya Purana - 16)
• Meditation: I meditate on the Dattatreya Avatara of Lord Vishnu.• Pativrata wife preventing the Sun to rise: A certain Kaushika brahmana lived in Pratishthana. Due to sins committed in earlier births, he was afflicted with leprosy. However, his wife used to serve him as god. She used to bathe him, clothe him, feed him, clean his mucus, blood etc., and give happiness with affectionate conversation. The brahmana was however hot-tempered and often harsh towards her. Inspite of that, she used to serve him as god. Once the brahmana saw a prostiture of well-rounded forms and became attracted towards her. He said to his wife that if he is unable to go to her, he will indeed die. The wife who was devoted towards her husband, in order to give him happiness, gathered money, and one night carried her husband towards the place of the prostitute, supporting him on her shoulders. The brahmana while going in that path, was fearful of thieves, and in darkness, pushed sage Mandavya with his foot who was impaled on a stake. Sage Mandavya pronounced a curse that the sinful soul who has pushed him with his foot will die at sunrise. The pati-vrata wife hearing this also exclaimed: The Sun will indeed not rise.
